Treworgey's Delights . . . .
Treworgey is set amid the most beautiful countryside Cornwall and the Southwest can offer. Each cottage has its own special view, own special garden, and shares a lovely heated swimming pool with just a few other guests. Each cottage contains a comprehensive information folder: a mass of holiday ideas, where to go, what to do, where to visit. Inside the folder you will find our own delights, and pet hates, covering our local towns and their attractions, plenty of walks and how to find them, beaches, coves and cliff headlands and how to find them, National Trust houses and gardens, best places to eat, best places to ride, fish, play golf and tennis, and where to find all of them! There are numerous very good museums and collections, and numerous attractions.
Spring comes a lot earlier in Cornwall! By the end of January we have Treworgey's flowers: snowdrops. Thousands of them - left over from the days when Treworgey was a small flower farm, sending snowdrops and daffodils “up country” to Covent Garden. The early double daffodils come in February. In March and April we have our own daffodils that we plant each year and camellias and rhododendrons - not to mention the abundance of wild flowers (including our magnificent bluebell wood) for which Cornwall is so well known. Why not try Treworgey “out of season”?
At Treworgey -
Breathtaking views across the Looe Valley
Barn Cottage
Four bedrooms to sleep up to 8 (+ a cot). Friday change.
two en-suite bathrooms and one large family bathroom
The restoration and conversion of this lovely old stone barn was completed in 1995. Barn Cottage has 4 large bedrooms, 2 with a double bed and 2 with twin beds and is an ideal home from home for families, sleeping 8 in comfort.
All the bedrooms have fitted wool carpets, antique furniture, pictures, romantic brass beds and lots of charm! The hall, landing, dining room, and kitchen have beautiful polished wood floors, with wool rugs. The farmhouse kitchen has Shaker-design fitted units which complement an old pine dresser, a pine farm kitchen table (once scrubbed, now lightly sealed), and other old pine pieces and pictures. It is fully equipped to today's highest standards,
The splendid sitting room has a beautiful polished wood floor, wool rugs, antiques, pictures, table lamps, wide screen tv,video , dvd,cd,radio and comfortable armchairs and sofas. A large gable window draws the daytime eye, as does a stone inglenook fireplace for blazing log fires at night.
The barn's outline, as it is today, is marked on the 1840 tithe map. It is undoubtedly considerably older than that. Barn Cottage is a truly delightful “interior designed” home - using antique furniture, pictures,Farrow and Ball paints and Laura Ashley or Sanderson soft furnishings, yet practical and spacious for families with children. From the large secluded garden a scene of rich patchwork fields (typical of Cornwall) encompass the eye catching Looe valley and the river below.
Secret Garden Cottage - For 6 guests (+ a cot). Idyllic family cottage. Friday change.
At least 200 years old and built of mellow stone, Secret Garden Cottage enjoys the same spectacular views as Well and Hollyhock Cottages and the "Suites" (see photos).
The cottage is detached with a walled, completely private (secret!) large garden. This delightful garden is thought to be the original walled kitchen garden for the medieval Treworgey manor house that was destroyed by fire centuries ago. The garden reminded us of Frances Hodgson Burnett's charming book of 1911, "The Secret Garden".
Because there are no stairs (there are four steps up to the bedrooms), Secret Garden is ideal for young children or more infirm relatives. The entrance hall leads to a bathroom (shower over bath), sitting room and three bedrooms: one delightful children's room with a special handmade, full-size draped,4 poster bunk bed, firmly built and secured; one romantic double room with polished mahogany draped four-poster bed, and (power) shower room en suite with loo and basin; and one charming room with wash-basin and twin beds (can be a king-size double bed, zipped together). All designed to give families flexibility.
The kitchen has high-quality cream “Shaker” cupboards. It is fully equipped to today's highest standards, There's a cosy dining area, and a traditional sitting room with a comfortable three-seater sofa and armchairs, tv, video, dvd, cd, a large open inglenook fireplace, and masses of old oak beams. The fabrics in Secret Garden are all Laura Ashley and warm paints, mostly Farrow and Ball. Pictures, books, lamps and antiques abound to create a charming mellow warmth. Many people tell us they dearly wish Secret Garden Cottage could be their own home!
River Barn - For 6 guests(+ a cot)Idyllic family cottage. Thursday change.
River Barn, one of the oldest buildings here at Treworgey dating back to the original Manor, was our final residential restoration here. Completed in 2006, this wonderful building has been our greatest challenge yet. Our ambition was to create a wonderful home and maintain the deep character of the building, whilst making it as environmentally friendly as possible. This was a huge challenge believe us! Very high insulation combined with the use of solar panels and a ground sourced heat pump were our main objectives.
Downstairs the entrance hall leads to a big farmhouse kitchen complimented by masses of oak beams, a lovely old pine dresser and farmhouse table in the middle. It is fully equipped to today's highest standards,
There is a downstairs shower and loo, dinning room and lovely big sittingroom with wide inglenook fireplace housing a wood burner . Oak beams, warm rich Farrow and Ball colours and laura Ashley fabrics compliment pictures, lamps, colourful wool rugs, antique furniture and loose covered sofa and chairs.
Upstairs the landing leads to a bathroom, three double bedrooms, one of which has a shower room en Suite. All have antiques, oak beams,(including the magnificent pegged roof trusses) oak floors, colourful wool rugs and masses of charm. One bedroom has a kingsize brass bed. The other two have zip together singles providing full flexibility for either twins or kingsize doubles. Both the cottage and the large sun trap secluded garden , have fabulous views down to the river.
Laurel and Elm Cottages - Each sleeps 4 (+ a cot). 2 bathrooms. Saturday changeover.
These cottages are very similar in size, yet entirely individual. Upstairs each has a spacious bathroom with fully fitted power shower enclosure separate to the free-standing roll-top bath while there is a second downstairs shower, basin and loo. The upstairs bedrooms are co-ordinated in Laura Ashley designs, each cottage having a charming twin bedroom, & a romantic double bedroom all with comfortable brass beds. The master bedrooms and sitting rooms have stunning views down their own “Coombe” to the Looe Valley beyond. There are charming old open-hearth fireplaces for romantic log fires (still a cloam oven in each kitchen), Cornish bluestone slate floors under quality wool rugs, a comfortable loose covered three seater sofa and two armchairs, some lovely antiques and lots of pictures, tv, video, dvd,cd, books and lamps. The attractive fitted kitchens are equipped to today's highest standards,
While Laurel has the larger garden, Elm has a second, very private, lower woodland garden. Stiles lead into a field. Each is a home from home with charm and comfort, and delightful sun trap gardens, with nothing but the small Cornish fields and wonderful views beyond them.
Trelawney Cottage. Friday change - our new cottage opening in 2008. sleeps 6 with 3 double bedrooms and 3 bath or shower rooms. Please phone for more details.
Jasmine Cottage - Two bedrooms sleeping 3 to 4. Saturday change.
Jasmine Cottage was once part of Treworgey shippen and barn. The cottage enjoys a lovely walled garden with roses round the door, climbing plants and flower borders. Downstairs, it has big oak beams, a wood-burning stove, Farrow and Ball paints and pretty Laura Ashley curtains and loose covers on the three-seater sofa and two armchairs. There are plenty of pictures, lamps, and books housed in a lovely antique pine cupboard. The sitting room leads into a wonderful, slate roofed conservatory/dining room, with enchanting views down to “our” valley and the river. The Shaker style fitted kitchen is fully equipped to today's highest standards,
Upstairs, like Elm and Laurel cottages, the romantic double bedroom has a very comfortable brass bed. The small pretty twin bedroom is ideal for an adult or two children (though full sized beds will sleep two adults comfortably if required). The upstairs bathroom (smaller than in Elm & Laurel), has a quality electric shower over the bath. The cottage looks across the garden to rolling patchwork fields. From the sunny garden you can enjoy the exhilarating view down the valley to the Looe river beyond.
Gamma's cottage - Ideal for Honeymooners - One super bedroom for 2 (+cot) Thursday Changeover. On one level with level garden providing easy access.
One of our last two cottages to be restored at Treworgey.(Opened in 2005.) ”Gamma's” cottage, with it's superb views to the river, was to be for Bevis's mother.(her nickname is Gamma). She decided to stay in Australia and just stay with us in our farmhouse each summer instead, hence her cottage with it's large sunny garden and private drive is available.
The spacious bedroom has twin zip together beds, giving the flexibility of a king size bed or twins. With polished oak floors and beautiful wool rugs, twisted ancient oak beams and oak doors, this bedroom is very romantic with it's antique furniture, pictures, lamps and Laura Ashley fabrics. A note about beds
In the descriptions of the individual cottages that follow some beds are described
as brass beds, some as four-posters'. The brass beds are highly attractive,
made in either black or white cast iron, with brass finishings, and have sumptuous
mattresses. They are manufactured by a local Cornish company using original
Victorian patterns and moulds. Like our romantic four posters which are solidly
made in polished turned mahogany with Laura Ashley or Sanderson drapes, the
brass' beds are a great success. Because they are so comfortable, guests often
purchase them for their homes.
